Obama engaged in proxy wars with Iran and slowed down their nuclear program with a deal that included sunset clauses that were going to phase out after 10-15 years (around 2025-2031).

I think there's a reason why this was about the best we could get with an Iran deal, and we see it now with what they're doing with the Strait of Hormuz. Iran can't actually beat the US in a straight-up war but they can make it all very costly and perhaps not worth the effort.

1. Obama's first election was a high-water mark: both him being a talented and charismatic figure at the top and the public being angry about Bush's performance (Iraq War, the financial crash). Hence a huge majority coming in. It wasn't going to last; there is always political backlash.

2. Republicans started really aggressively gerrymandering after they won a bunch of state legislatures in the ensuing midterms.

3. Dems have kind of lost touch with rural voters, and unfortunately for the blue team those voters have a far outsized representation in the Senate.

Just because there are a lot of Republicans in more rural states doesn't mean those states have representation. Who in our government is showing any concern about family farms being squeezed out by corporate mega-farms, water issues, and generally improving the economies of those states? Neither party is, which is why Democrats don't win in those states and they lose on cultural bull*****
