Earlier this year, there were a bunch of articles on how Prince Philip would celebrate his 100th birthday. I was like: Isn't this a bit premature?

I had the same reaction to the celebration of Betty White this week (and, really, the last month) ahead of her 100th birthday on January 17. Like, maybe wait till somebody turns 100 before celebrating their 100th birthday?

Last night, Steve Martin was tweeting about her. And I was like: Why is he tweeting about her 3 weeks before her 100th birthday? That's the kind of tweet you either tweet out on her 100th birthday or when she dies.

To be technical, AWVS was more a civil defense/war effort support/Red Cross type organization. I doubt it counted as military service. To be cynical, it was probably something an actress could do to look like she was doing her part for the war effort without having it get in the way of her acting career. The uniform Betty White was wearing does make me wonder if she wore that for the AWVS or if she enlisted in the military, though Wikipedia doesn't mention an enlistment.

"Lee Elder, who became the first Black golfer to play in The Masters in 1975, died Sunday at the age of 87, the PGA Tour announced today.

"The game of golf lost a hero in Lee Elder," Jack Nicklaus tweeted.
The big picture: Elder was 40 when he played in his first Masters, with many of his prime years already stolen from him by the scourge of racism, AP notes."

I took many golf lessons from Lucius Bateman from age 11 to age 16 (1965-1970). He originally taught at a driving range by the Oakland Airport called Airway Fairways, and then at a driving range in the back of Duggan's Sporting Goods by Bayfair Shopping Center in San Leandro. He was a great man.

Remembering Lucius Bateman - African American Golfer's Digest

http://africanamericangolfersdigest.com/lucius-bateman/

Bearister,

I took golf lessons from Lucius Bateman as well, in 1964 and 1965. We may have passed each other at the Airway Fairways. (Some fairways! Mostly yellow or brown-colored grass or dirt). I had little money in those days, and Lucius often didn't charge me for a lesson. He sometimes asked me to help him by picking up balls off the range fairways, a hazardous task, but I was grateful for the lessons. Lucius often gave kids their lessons in exchange for helping with the chores.

As you know, Lucius taught the great Tony Lema, who won the British Open. (Lema was killed in a plane crash at the young age of 32, with 22 PGA Tour wins.) Lucius also taught several other players who later made the PGA tour: John and Dick Lotz, Ross Randall, Ron Cerrudo, and Bob Smith.

The Driving Range at Alameda Muni was named for the great man and teacher. I hope it is still there.

Anyway, it will be one more thing we have in common, and if we ever get together in person, we will have some Lucius Bateman stories to share, along with all the Cal stories, of course.

Betty White's death on Dec. 31 marked the fifth major figure from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" to pass in 2021. Actors Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod, Ed Asner and director Jay Sandrich also died during the year that just ended.

The coincidental timing of the losses of these legends underscores the passage of time for the network television business. "Mary Tyler Moore," "All in the Family," "MASH" and other early 1970s shows ushered in the era of big ensemble comedy hits destined to endure as classics of the form.

TV historian Tim Brooks has dubbed this period the "relevance era," representing a backlash to the fantasy escapism of 1960s comedy hits such as "Bewitched" and "I Dream of Jeannie."

Mary Tyler Moore herself died in 2017. Ted Knight died in 1986. The show originally aired on CBS from September 19, 1970, to March 19, 1977. 168 episodes.

I always had a tough time getting into the TV show MASH because of how edgy and counter culture Gould and Sutherland came off in the movie. The TV show seemed too whitebread.

*Not to mention how epic that Fu Man Chu was.

It was many years later that I learned the tv show was based on a movie.
I think I saw part of it once decades ago. I was used to Hawkeye comedy and didn't like the darkness.
Now, of course, I'm grown up and would get all the political messaging I suspect was the crux of the film.

MASH was the first movie I saw after I got my driver's license, at the Parkway Theater, Oakland.
I saw this quirky Robert Altman follow up film the same year, 1970:

Brewster McCloud (1970) - IMDb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065492/

The star of the movie, Bud Cort (who had a bit part in MASH) went on to make the cult film, Harold and Maude, the next year.

> The 1920s-era Parkway Theater was in disrepair when the Speakeasy Theater took it over in 1996; it had last shown films in 1990. The new owners converted the seating, created the kitchen, and opened their unique offering of "progressive indies, second-run Hollywood flicks, and old classics" together with comfortable seating, food and beverages, including beer and wine. On March 22, 2009, the Parkway theater went out of business.
