The NYPD already has 49,000 officers. How many more do they really need? It's 1 officer per 165 citizens now. As for slashing $11 million from their budget, their budget is $6.5 billion, so the cut isn't much.

They have about 33,000 officers, actually. New York also hosts 300,000 tourists a day.

NYPD has 49,000 employees and 34,000 cops.
Hiring reductions come with the territory when you have a $12 billion deficit from the previous administration.

300,000, in a city of 8,500,000...

To be clear, it isn't a cut of 5,000 officers - It is not going forward with Mayor Adams planned expansion of 5,000 officers. Mamdani inherited a huge budget deficit. This is good governance.

New York and Washington DC have a ton of landmarks etc to protect. It makes sense to have a large police force.

Statue of Liberty (which is kind of geographically isolated), Empire State building, maybe Times Sq, and?? The museums with expensive art have their own guards.

From Wags' chart above, it sounds like the NYPD is bloated and could use some DOGEing.

Way more than that. The density and wealth alone makes most of Manhattan a high priority terrorist target, as well as the bridges and tunnels. They even needed to hold back Godzilla in 1998.

Funding Kristi Noem's perks and vanity travel budget isn't cheap.

Edit: I didn't intend to use that post emoji, but it's not too far off the mark.
