We should retire Cal and just go with Berkeley. Our helmet can have the Nobel prize emblem on it.

We can also change our mascot from Golden Bears to.... The Berkeliums or The Cyclotrons.

Instead of the Golden Bears we could be the California Berkelium Bears, with Bk on our helmet?

I like the Cyclotrons idea. We could be the Berkeley Cyclotrons or Berkeley Cyclos for short, and could have "Cyclos" on our helmets.

ESPN being out of the B1G media deal is GREAT news for Cal. Now ESPN will badly want the PAC-12 to slot after the SEC games and can be a great partner for marketing our brand in SoCal in competition with the LA schools. Maybe more SEC matchups? Our chances of finally getting an ESPN Gameday just went up.

It also creates more of an incentive for Fox and the B1G to want to break up the PAC-12 by offering more PAC-12 schools.

Either way, this is good news for Cal

If we were with Nike and could do a zillion different helmets, it would be kinda cool to have one with the Bk atomic element box on it. Would get great coverage on ESPN and elsewhere and would make those a-holes finally acknowledge our academic prowess instead of always felating out friends down on the peninsula.

What if the Pac is quickly able to strike a deal with ESPN? What would the Big and SC/'UCLA do then? They might have a 30 day window to cobble something together. Delicious.

It would mean more night games, wouldn't it? Unless we are in the top 10, College GameDay will NEVER come to Cal.

P12 versus the SEC would not be a good thing right now. The P12 would get rolled.

You may right about Game Day, but I totally disagree on the SEC. Having a ton of games will increase the PAC's visibility and allow our top teams to play if time schools. We can't moan about not getting into the B1G then turn tail at the chance to play against the SEC.

Aren't we 3-1 against SEC in the recent past (2 vs Tennessee and 2 vs Ole Miss)? 5-1 if you throw Texas in there.

Don't know about the rest of the PAC but it's clear we own that conference!!!!

Yeah. People keep saying we'd be destroyed in the two super conferences (B1G and SEC), but recent results don't support that.

How does it elevate the profile of the P12 if we go head to head and lose? Isn't that the chief issue with the P12? Teams look bad on national stage. No teams in CFP. And I'm not moaning about not getting into B1G. Unless we could play Minnesota, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Illinois every year - I'm iffy on it. lol

IMHO, the Big Ten isn't all that with the exception of the three or four very top teams. After all, you've listed half the teams in the conference. With a good coach (yeah, I know, that's been a problem since Tedford),Cal would be fine. We wouldn't win the conference, but we'd be fine nonetheless.

This is the part I don't get: Shouldn't the long-term plan be for these "super-conferences" to jettison their weak sisters? Since we're looking at a wholesale shakeup anyway, why don't the stronger teams completely abandon the conferences they are in right now and form something brand new, instead of having to share with the likes of Indiana, Illinois, etc.?

Something to do with contracts, I would imagine. But only a matter of time, right?

We'll see what happens, but IMO the "power" programs want the benefit of having 5 to 7 free wins every year. If they only had to play each other then a bunch of them would go 3-9 or 2-10 and that would not make the donors happy.

3-9, sure. But if you actually created a new division with the top 40 or so teams then fans would get very accustomed to 8-4 and making the playoffs.

The SEC is not only Alabama, Georgia, and LSU. They have mediocre programs too.

If that's the case, then they want Cal!!!

We will do it for a partial share, too!

I don't know if we ever get there, but I could see college sports best/eventually organized on a regional basis with multiple divisions in each region and promotion/relegation determining which division you are in within your region. We could then jettison conferences and their expense.

Rights to broadcast individual games would be up for auction, with the two schools splitting the revenues. Schools would make essentially what they earn, and wouldn't have to split their revenues with conference members. It would be essentially a free market system, with division level and revenues based mostly on performance.

Powers that be, we are just what you want and need:

* Partial share? Check.

* Thurs/Fri/Sat 10 PM slot (Eastern Time). We're on board.

* Can't match your NIL package? No worries.

* Play dead when you come recruit our back yard. On it.

* Want your band to sound loud by comparison? "Squeak" goes our clarinet section.

* Boost the academic rep of the conference while you get the wins? "Still no OhioStadium".

The California Golden Bears are the perfect fit for anybody's Super-Conference!

And the perfect environment for mousy Knowlton to quietly melt our program into non-existence. He's already 2/3 of the way there!
