Yeah but core is this at 3.1%. I think that is the main problem for the administration as it is hard to see the Fed cutting when you have that. Shelter is still running at 4%.

It is welcome news but one of the reasons why the Tariff stuff is just awful economics (and politics) because in the short term it isn't going to lower inflation which means minimal interest rates cuts which will keep confidence lower than it should be which means increased risk of recession/low growth.

Really the adults have left the building when you have a failed UC Irvine economist serving as the main author of industrial policy. He really is an idiot and I remained STUNNED how he got tenure.

I can't believe you, Oskie, and Mr. Movielover aren't talking about how Consumer Sentiment data was released today showing that it fell to more than a 2 YEAR LOW.

The preliminary March sentiment index dropped to 57.9%, the lowest level lsince November 2022 from 64.7% a month earlier according to the University of Michigan data issued today.

Why would Consumer Sentiment plunge to a 2 YEAR LOW under President Trump?

The most powerful man in the United States will be wrapping up 2-days of FED Committee Meetings going over monetary policy. He makes his typically scheduled press conference at 11:30 AM PST today and invites a usually most robust Q&A which almost always impacts the financial markets.

Should be highly interesting commentary given the current Administration's fascination with TARIFFS that are clearly inflationary.

PS. There is a short-term cycle low coming in right here for the U.S. stock market.

A very Oversold Market found some reassurance in what Powell had to say.

There will be a slow down in the run-off of Treasuries to reduce the balance sheet.
Moving from a $25 billion cap per month to only $5 billion per month.
Thus, QT and this process of decreasing the balance sheet will take
longer than planned.

Was helpful to the 10-year.

He could have been more "hawkish".
But he wasn't.

He did note that surveys on inflation expectations have increased.
But he seemed to "downplay" those surveys because they are short-term and can be highly emotional.

He implied that he would not push back (pre-emptive action) on the Tariffs and deems their inflationary impact as "transitory".

Seems to be a higher tolerance for inflation by the Fed.
Can't believe J Powell used the word "transitory" again.

But we all know that Jerome Powell thought that inflation was "transitory" 2.5 years ago and how did that work out?

Interestingly enough, not a single reporter asked about the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on April 2nd.

They cut GDP growt to 1.7%
And increased Unemployment to 4.4% for the year.
Kept their forecast of 2 rate cuts for the year.

SPX +85 at 5700 with 40-minutes left.

SPX close +60.

Stocks snapped a 4-week losing streak this week with the S&P finishing up 0.5%

Looks like today's "triple-witch" expiration of options and futures caused a nice push into the close.

A ton of economic data will be coming out all next week.

And of course, more tariffs on April 2nd.

It also didn't help that the latest data showed US consumer sentiment tumbled to a more than two-year low while long-term inflation expectations jumped to a 32-year high as American anxiety over Trump's handling of the economy continues to build.

The final March sentiment index declined to 57 from 64.7 a month earlier, according to the University of Michigan. The latest reading was below both the 57.9 preliminary number and the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists. Consumers expect prices to rise at an annual rate of 4.1% over the next five to 10 years, the data released Friday showed. That's the highest since . . . wait for it . . . wait for it . . . 1993.
