Interesting chart. (WSJ). People with jobs are holding on, some for dear life. Replacement jobs dwindling. Not a place to be if you are aging out and want to squeeze out a few more $$$ while on in the gravy train years. Been thru a few of these…what typically ensues is mgt goes looking around to cut dead weight

Been laid off twice since that number started dropping, each time forced to take less money because the options were not great (and I felt lucky to get hired the last time). Can confirm this is how it is.

Start teaching, always job openings after people realize they can't cut it or get too frustrated with admin and parents and bail

A friend of mine that I coached in high school track who is a CAL alum teaches in the Acalanes High School District at my alma mater. She retired in 2023 and was making $115,000 salary + other pay got her up to $120,000

That was after 30 years teaching Social Science.

In California, if you retire from public school teaching at age 56, your pension will take a pretty big hit, compared to if you waited until 62 or 63.

When I retired, my school district paid for 50% of my health care until Medicare kicked in, but it's not necessarily like that in every district.

Somebody like me will pay for my retirement and healthcare (until 65) and that retired teachers retirement and healthcare (until 65).

My point is that we should all have healthcare and all have the same retirement plan. If that were true then teachers should get paid more.

Most field trips are pretty chill. Many parents are pretty chill. It's the other group of parents that drive teachers crazy

It's not that. I just volunteered to drive to enough elementary school field trips as a parent that I realized that most of them were boring as hell. What I liked far more was volunteering in the classes and helping kids with reading and math. But I spent a large part of my life working in a non teaching role at a high school and that brought into sharp relief how insufferable the parents are.

Nothing rankles me like people that think teachers are overpaid and get too much time off. Most ignorant opinion that exists.

Get back in the classroom! The field needs people that enjoy the actual teaching. The rest can be a lot but it's usually worth it

That seems about right. Trump was president during COVID, which shut down tons of jobs. Biden was president during the reopening and tons of tax money was flooded into the economy. Trump is again president and the economy is tightening, and AI is taking jobs.
