The WSJ took a lot of crap about reporting that there was a birthday cards to Epstein in a file, one of which appeared to be signed by Trump. Yet they refused to back off and produced the card eventually. They are not backing off their early reports on the alleged Kirk assassin. I might add having a transsexual partner may change your world view, but it doesn't mean that the partner is complicit or even knew about the murder attempt, or there is some type of Dajo type conspiracy afoot.

AT THIS TIME, all the authorities have said is that they believe Robinson acted alone, and that he had become more "political" lately. They also have described etchings on bullet shells. They have not publicly identified a motive yet. There are some refutable sources such as the BBC that are implying motives based on what they believe is Robinson's purported Internet history, and they may need to apologize or not.

A more mature approach is to wait for the information to come out and follow are shockingly good Congress flock in universally condemning Kirk's death, and the spike in political violence that has touched a range of ideologies and representatives of both major political parties.

That said, there is right to expression on this site and elsewhere, no matte how stupid (and I have had some real stupid posts in my time),. I'm appalled that people are being fired from their jobs for expressing their views on Kirk or his assassination,, no matter how insensitive. And I suspect Kirk, being a First Amendment type would agree with that.

Mixed bag legally.

Well there was a reason I used teachers and as you can see from the article, there are many public employees being terminated. The answer traditionally was that public employees have first amendment protections for things they said outside their work. Period. That is being carved away with exceptions by the courts.

The private employer side is way more difficult, since there is no governmental action to bring in the first amendment. For example, in certain states like California which protect private speech, there can be no employer action for lawful, off-duty speech, though the exact protections and how they are interpreted by courts vary. So a court or jury in say the Bay Area will look at the speech way more differently say a court or jury in Fresno.
