Strong disagree. That kid was raises in gun culture. I would never raise my son that way. My teenage son has asked me about getting a gun and / or going shooting and I have told him that as a minor he will never get my permission to shoot or have a gun.

The internet is poison and I fight that fight with my son. All the more reason to keep him clear of guns.

I say this with respect but I feel like that is narrowly coastal Californian of you. Again, not my cup of tea but I recognize that millions of Americans are raised with DEEP roots in hunting culture and it is part of a multi-generational legacy.

Yup.

Looks like the Trumpanzees have taken a 'break" and are awaiting more talking "points" from their master.
They must be terribly disappointed that this kid wasn't gay, trans, or black . . . or came from a gun-hating liberal family.

I've already seen it on Twitter. The new line is that he was radicalized by Marxist college professors. I'm sure we'll see the flood of posts on this from the usual suspects soon.

I may be colored surprised but it feels like one semester at Utah State is not going to be the kind of place that exposes him to the teachings of Angela Davis and convinces him to storm the barricades of freedom.

Y'all might want to wait for the story to come out. Lot of posts here may not age well. Robinson purportedly has a lot of stuff on the internet.

My basic assumption is that he's going to have a very weird mish-mash of radical political opinions like the guy who shot at Trump.

Looks like you'll need a degree in 4chan and online gaming culture to decipher him. Therefore, people will push whatever reality they want to create. But he is of the conservative right wing Christian gun culture. That is his upbringing.

So did Robinson attend Utah State or Utah Valley University? I'm seeing both schools mentioned. Also, he's 22 and only attended 1 semester?

The shooting happened at Utah Valley. I'm not sure where he went to school.

EDIT: Oh, here we go, Utah State said he attended for one semester there.

Utah State said that he "briefly attended Utah State University for one semester in 2021.
He was offered an academic scholarship. And his Mom posted an ACT score of 34 out of 36.

A top ACT achiever that attended a fairly average local school and then dropped out after one semester raises some red flags for me.

And if such questions could be asked when a black kid robs a convenience store, that would be good, too!!!!

Not disagreeing - I am just struck today (not at the exclusion of a kid robbing a convenience store) with the young men that seem to be radicalized by some of the darkest aspects of the internet.

Btw- that MAY be the more complicated reading. The first take was Kirk and his views on the second amendment. This would suggest that Kirk's fame and fortune is directly related to a viral social media world fueled by eyeballs, clicks and outrage which, ironically, is consumed by a very small minority that go onto to do horrible horrible things (whether this kid, the shooter in bultler or the incel killer in Santa Barbara.)

There's a lot of **** said here on BI, too, but I think we are significantly older and therefore wiser.

Younger people make horrific life decisions every day.

EDIT: newsflash on my tv.
In Chicago a cop pulled over someone as an ICE stop. Driver tried to drive away. Cop shot and killed the driver.

Just like the Kirk situation, one person is dead.
Was that a good decision by the cop?

I really have become interested in this wave of criminology coming out of the whole "fast and slow" thinking observation. Resonates with me because of my professional interest in behavioral economics. It isn't to explain (or excuse) crime but it does suggest why fighting crime is really inefficient.

Murder rates on a year basis are really bad metric becaise of random noise. I would use a smooting technique and look at the very least a 4 year period. I also would statiscally control for changes im age of population as we know most crime is committed by men in their 20s.
