After perusing this thread, without being rhetorical, I'd just like to know who would take over the the hundreds of thousands of jobs currently occupied by undocumented workers in this country that facilitate our food supply. Again, I'm not being rhetorical. This has been asked on this thread, and not answered. This isn't really a us vs them problem either. There are massive problems with minimum wage and workplace requirements that demand that under-the-table jobs are a huge part of the undocumented workforce. So despite all of that, who will work those jobs?

Can't we just grant citizenship to those undocumented workers who want to be citizens and are willing to take an easy citizenship test? Those who don't want to be citizens can be deported. We then enact laws that actually allow us to secure the border and remove laws that make it difficult to do so.udaman1 said:

This would require a massive overhaul to the citizenship path in this country.
Plus, I don't know that everyone who is working here, documented or not, wants to be a citizen.
That's the problem that the right is overlooking. We don't have Americans willing to do the hard grunt work on farms and in orchards. Deport the illegal aliens and we'll have food rotting in the fields unharvested.udaman1 said:

Who said anything about 40 to 50 million people? But to your point, even employing, somebody at minimum wage is very expensive when you consider all the Workers Compensation, payroll tax, and required benefits, especially here in California.
Part of my point is that many undocumented workers do NOT receive these benefits or even minimum wage. It is a pretty gross exploitation of a demographic. If they disappear, the backlash in terms of cost of food to American families is going to be catastrophic. It is not a good situation from either side of the argument.
The threat of being unable to afford food is exponentially greater to any American than is the threat of physical violence from an illegal immigrant. That is abundantly clear.
