As I mentioned elsewhere, this guy is connected to West Virginia and thus focuses on Big 12, but has been mostly unbiased in reporting rumors as far as what the networks are pushing for (and at this point, it seems the Pac-10 is reliant largely on ESPN):

That is a horrible deal. 22 million each team or 37 mil for Oregon and Washington who will have a tougher schedule. That is nothing money in todays market of B1G and SEC getting 100 mil. It would still be the death of our league.
But wait, if we say "alliance" a few more times, can't the get us at least above 25% of the B1G payout?

He was saying Stanford would be a natural rival for ND IF they were both in the B1G.

Somebody explain to me why Stanfurd has ever been, is now, or will ever be "natural rivals" with Notre Dame.

I'm not sure a home-and-home series over the past recent years is sufficient to make the qualification.

Haven't they played since 1988? I don't think they played in 2020 because of covid but I think its 34 years straight apart from that.

I believe it is annually since 1997, skipping 2020, with the current series about to expire.

But if Stanford wants Notre Dame to be their rival they won't care if we make Berkeley the permanent home of the Axe?

I think our best option is to keep the pac-12 together and bring on sdst and Fresno. Then, the conference cuts off any games with USC and UCLA forcing them to travel far for every single away game making travel an even larger issue for them.

Right, they played 88-94, then started a new series in 97 that was due to end soon.

Notre Dame's Wiki lists 5 rivals: Michigan, Michigan State, Navy, USC and Miami. Stanford is not one of them:

It wouldn't but I don't see any scenario that benefits us save for getting into the B1G. The key is finding the next best alternative while also sticking it to USC and UCLA by mitigating their recruiting exposure in our area and maximizing their travel pain.

I don't like the idea of adding any MWC teams, but certainly not CA teams.

Cal has essentially no leverage. The PiG invite would be a gift at any payout. A Bigger 12, is better than nothing. A Pac10 is a gift from all the schools. Maybe close to our present payout. The Pac3+ is lower division by any other name.

Take your pick, but you don't get to pick.

If we don't get into the B1G our best fallback option is probably a reduced PAC that plays a round robin schedule plus Alliance games with the ACC, Notre Dame, B12, whatever we can come up with. Most likely we keep our TV revenues at the current level (we were hoping for a big increase). If we need more money for the stadium debt, we need to cut costs.

They should snatch up two west coast teams for sure.

If you play 12 games - 3 are OOC (so conveniently scheduled) 3 are west coast conference teams and 3 of the remaining 6 are at home - you only have 3 miserable travel games. Most teams have at least one of those currently, so the new conference is not that much worse for football travel.

Other sports may not be that much worse either , even if most (all?) of them have many more conference games. If you can play 2 on a road swing, you may be able to keep the number of Midwest swings manageable - if you have 4 West Coast teams... If not it is going to suck.

But then, maybe they don't care about the LA-B1Gs.

Plus - Traditional marching bands are woven into the fabric of the Big 10. We have the ONLY traditional marching band in the Pac-12 that can hang with those others in the Big 10. The B1G powers will certainly be aware of this and this will be what pushes us over the top and seals the deal. Stanfurd gets in on the understanding that their musical group not attend any games.

Thirty years (or so) of two teams playing each other isn't diddly, in the grand scheme of things. I refuted the term "natural rivels". For example, you "30 years!" people, do you know how old our solar system is?

Literally the worst option I have heard yet. Adding those 2 teams (unless they can generate $20 MM per school) will dilute our overall revenue, meaning we take LESS per school.

At this point. Its B1G or bust. We likely wont get a Big 12 invite nor should we really go. I think its B1G or fold up shop and focus on academics

Well they have played Pitt 69 times and Army 90 times or something, but do not consider them to be rivals. We have played Oregon State forever, but do not consider them to be rivals. Texas yes, even though we have only played them a few times.

Of course it matters who Notre Dame thinks is a rival. Rivalry is a feeling, expressed especially by the fans. The idea is to include a rival to get Notre Dame to join. That is one of the reasons USC is in and UCLA with them.

To be rivals, the schools must at least:

- Be comparable in ways other than the sport, i.e. academics, location, mission, etc.
- Hate each other
- Have played some vicious games which the student bodies remember with rage
- Kill the other side's mascot or commit crimes against the campus
- Have a trophy symbolizing some atrocity committed early in their shared history
- Hate each other
- Alums compete in life for jobs, financial success, global recognition

ND/Furd is too gentlemanly to be considered a rivalry. No one cares. Maybe Furd wants it to be. ND? Pffft.

Notre Dame and Miami are rivals because they played a couple of games that decided national titles. The rivalry got so intense, ND decided to stop playing Miami altogether. That said, Notre Dame and Stanford have a annual trophy for the winner of the game, which, to me, makes it a rivalry game.

ND hasn't played Miami since 2017. And they aren't going to play again until 2024. They've only played 26 times and only like 4 times in past 20 years. It doesn't matter what ND considers to be a rivalry. They play Stanford every year. They've played 34+ times. It IS a rivalry game.

Ugh. We are not rivals with Texas. It is not a rivalry game. Come on, really?? If you include Texas, then it blows any valid definition of "rivalry game" or "rivals" off the map.

ND/Stanford is a rivalry game. It is Midwest v. West. It is a natural fit for Stanford to be included into the B1G if Notre Dame decides to join. ND's other rivals (Michigan, MSU) are also there. Its a natural fit.

And as another poster wrote, this thread has likely run its course if we are debating this.

Right, they played 88-94, then started a new series in 97 that was due to end soon.
Yeah I don't know what happened 95-96.

Stanford played their longer time rival, San Jose State.

As I said above, Notre Dame considers the following 5 schools to be rivals:
Michigan
Michigan State
Navy
USC
Miami

The rivals are all in the NCAA football video game before the O'Bannon lawsuit shut it down. Cals rivals are USC UCLA Furd. ND is the only school with a ton of rivals and Furd is one of them.

$220 million is a disaster. Next B1G TV/media deal is going to be $1 Billion+.

Not a reputable or reliable source.
This guy was reporting USC and UCLA being targeted by FOX and the B1G back in April. But I'm sure he's way off. LOL,

This guy is an idiot. He's been exposed as a fraud. He knows nothing. He's trolling for followers and we're helping him. Zero chance this guy knew about actual negotiations in April and literally no one else seemed to know.

Assuming that the current 10 teams stay intact, and we decide to add two new schools, perhaps go for Nevada and New Mexico. They both fit our model, being flagship public universities. They would also consolidate our dominance in the Mountain time zone.
