How can it be the Donald looks taller than Bruce? I would think a decathlon champion would be taller.
He's at least 6-02 and more like 6-02.50
I hung out with Bruce in the lobby of the Valley River Inn late one night at the 2012 Olympic Trials in Eugene.
My buddy was a pole vault coach and we did a road trip up to Eugene to support former Cal pole vaulter Allison Stokke. My buddy's Dad had coached Bruce in the pole vault at SJSU. Bruce was the most affable, humble, gracious, guy. He was telling stories about what it was like to room with Steve Prefontaine and 400m runner Wayne Collett (Silver) in Munich in '72. He wasnt even talking about himself. He was talking about Pre the whole time.
The photo below shows him with former WR holder and Olympic Medalist in the Decathlon, Ashton Eaton from the 2012 Olympic Trials. Eaton was a 5-time NCAA Champion for Oregon and the second decathlete to break the 9,000 point barrier. He won Gold in London 2012.
Eaton is 6-01.
Great story.
I can't imagine being dealt the hand of gender flipping in life.
The thing I don't get about it with Jenner is that we think of decathletes as the ultimate macho men. How was he able to harness all the testosterone and psychological fight while feeling like a woman inside. Shows what little I understand about it all. I'll have to read his book, which I assume addresses to some degree.
I can totally see Bruce being as you described. I remember him from the 70's. Seemed way cool, down to earth.
