As a matter of politics and social sciences it will be fascinating to see all of this unfold. And I guess one of the good things about being in a one party state is that I won't be subjected to the political ads, so I'll be able to watch from afar.

Solution: dump your current cable TV provider, get YouTubeTV, record everything, watch everything from the recorded Library, and skip every commercial ever invented!

Thank you, Okaydo!!!
I could EASILY do this. The wife and kids...well let's just say the cable package is a lot less expensive than a divorce attorney

YouTubeTV is cheaper than your cable, I suspect. So there's that. It has all the same channels except Pac12Network. But that will likely be changing. And tell your wife and kids they are capable of learning a new remote.

If it's Trump and Biden again, no one should ever say that American is a country of innovation. We are a country that retreads all of the failed ideas because we would rather have 80-90 year senile egomaniacs than those with actual potential. We would be saying we would prefer the comfort of known utter failures over the risk of unknown potential. And if we end up with Trump and Biden again, this democracy may not even be worth saving if that is the height of its potential.

DeSantis is way worse than Trump. He's actually smart , equally ruthless and unlike Trump would probably win .

Trump vs Biden would definitely open possibilities of third and fourth party candidates and unlike most years they may not be trivial considering that the two most unpopular Presidents may be running against each other. Fun times
it'll never happen.

In order to have another party joint the fray, laws about ballots need to be put in place everywhere. Two parties have a lock on that. It won't get voted in everywhere.

Right now it's automatic that a Republican will be on every ballot and a Democrat will be. You have to go thru a special process of signatures for each and every non R/D candidate and ballot.

Duopoly is the problem.
It's really the American system that prevents third parties from getting any traction. The problem is that our national government is only partially based on proportional representation (the House). The Senate and Presidency are decided on first-past-the-post popular votes by state. That encourages everyone to sort themselves into two parties: one to support the President and one to oppose him.

It's not like a Parliamentary system where everyone votes for candidates or parties and then the winning coalition votes for a Prime Minister. That allows the 3rd or 4th strongest parties to still potentially wield influence if one of the top two can't gain a clear majority. There's more incentive for cooperation. In America you don't need that, you just need to finish in first place in enough places. That incentivizes adversarial behavior. In the past, even when one of the major parties has collapsed (like the Whigs), everyone still just re-sorted themselves into one of the two new contenders.

You'd basically need to revamp our national government and design it more like Germany or Canada or something, if you really want third parties to be viable.

I don't know what congressional district you live in, but if there is a Republican candidate you are still going to be bombarded with ads of said candidate aligning with Trump. If it were DeSantis or some other GOP presidential candidate, you wouldn't have the same issue but he demands 100% fealty and the rest of the GOP is happy to oblige. Or terrified not to, however you want to see it.

I appreciate this response even though I feel your mental deterioration has been on exhibit for some time now with your posts.

People with differing views need to simply engage and discuss reasonably and honestly. The troll bit and the haywire antics that you and BF2 engage in at alarming rates that cause you too to get scolded with time outs, you all need to grow from and it and learn. Can you show you are capable of that?

Oregon. Suburb of Portland. Comparted to CA its politically like living in, I don't know... well, actually I don't know. But suffice to say Blue state, Blue Congressional district, Blue everything. One side probably considers it a major victory if they can force the other to spend any money here.

To get othe Presidential ballot as an independent in states you either pay money or get signatures. For example California 195,000 signatures. Texas, 80,090. New York 30,000. Florida, 130,000. Some states just require a fee. Point is it's doable if a pain in the a$$. The point here is not wholesale change from bottom up but top, down

The Ross Perot campaign in '92 left me feeling that it was not out of the question for a "third party" candidate to win the Presidency. And especially today, with fewer people holding a strong party allegiance. He/she would have to be very compelling (and probably rich) and the Dem and GOP candidates would both have to be super-lame.

Somebody coming in and talking straight common sense could really get traction. Nixon spoke of a "silent majority" meaning quiet conservatives, but right now I think there are a lot of moderates who are fed up with the bs.

Most governments in Europe have multi-party systems. We have 2.
If you want to fix this, you have to create ballots that have multiple parties on them. In every jurisdiction.

A third party could win the WH, but it'd revert after his/her term because of the laws around elections and ballots. The party underlings are not going to write laws changing that.

Control is by unknown party masters.
Duopoly.

That would be great but I doubt it will happen. Hard to swap out a VP, particularly for Newsom. I would like to see Pete B become the VP if there would be a swap since Pete is the best messenger the democrats have right now and he could actually do something with the VP platform.

I don't think Dr. Biden is calling the shots - there is no indication we're in a Ron and Nancy situation.

The most likely scenario by far is Biden/Harris running against Trump in 2024. It will be interesting to see which of his children Trump chooses as his running mate.

I don't know where you heard that, but that seems incredibly unlikely.

The only times a VP has stepped down in the middle of a term were during the Nixon years when Agnew resigned and then Ford was appointed and then Nixon resigned and Ford appointed Rockefeller after becoming President.

Additionally, the President can make a new appointment, but that appointment needs to be confirmed by a majority vote of both the United States House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

In this system you vote for someone or against someone. We've had six years of disastrous government so it's going to be against but Biden doesn't inspire the dislike Trump does which means the Dems will continue to spin their "our democracy is at stake from fascists " fantasies because they have nothing else. They need Trump badly.

Unless Biden can turn around the economy by the middle of 2024, I generally agree. There are two other rays of hope for democrats though. First, I think Trump is almost guaranteed to run. But, if for some reason he doesn't, he is likely to be the GOP's worst enemy by trashing their nominee. He's not going to go out and stump for DeSantis or Nikki Haley or whomever. Anyone who thinks he will selflessly step aside for the "good" of our nation, the GOP or any other reason is incredibly naive.

The GOP is pretty much pinning its hopes on Trump being successful at subverting state by state election systems.
