Two stories:
1. I grew up off Golf Links Road a few miles from Knowland Park Zoo. My dad was coming home from work one evening and he took the 98th Avenue/Golf Links Road exit from 580. At the bottom of that off ramp is a 4 way stop (the Bottleneck Liquor Store is there). My dad said Sonny Barger (then head of the Hells Angels, and who lived in the vicinity) pulled up to the stop sign to the right (Golf Links where it crosses 98th Avenue (O'Dowd up the 98th hill))and that he waived my dad to proceed first. My dad reported at the dinner table: "That Sonny Barger is sure a gentleman." The OPD may have taken issue with that;

2. Matthew Polly, a Rhodes Scholar from Princeton and a Jeet Kune Do practitioner and junkie, has written the definitive biography of Bruce Lee. I loved it. I had some knowledge of one of the incidences in the book and sent him an email. He sent a very gracious reply.

When they open my gym I'm going to wait for a while to see if anyone contracts COVID 19 before I go back. I lift and swim. How does a weight room work with social distancing, masks (I'd pass out), and wiping down a machine for each person? It would take 3 hours to work out. Even though a doctor will tell you swimming is safe, if I am sharing a lane or close to a swimmer in the next lane, I don't want to swallow a discharge from their mouth or nose if a wave washes it into my mouth during my breath cycle.

I'm improvising at home for now like Huey Newton did in his prison cell. Gyms are human Petri dishes. That industry is f'd until they figure this thing out.

Thats s good plan. Half if why I go is to socialize with people. It will be interesting to see what they do. Every other treadmill ? Same for other Cardio? I would not go near the weights fir a long time. Locker rooms? Might be better to shower at home for a while, if you can

Gyms are human Petri dishes. Did they see an exorbitant amount of covid cases? I've read that contracting the disease via surfaces is much less likely. The gym business will be interesting to watch. On the one hand, distancing and no touching is almost impossible. On the other, the clients are healthy and eventually may just figure they can fight this disease off like the flu. BTW, I'm not a gym member.

My gym encourages people to wipe down machines after every use anyway, so it's not a big behavioral change for us. They provide hydrogen peroxide cleaner. When this covid stuff started they put in extra disposable towels and cleaner, and had staff continuously wiping stuff down in addition to anything the members were doing. They also roped off every other cardio machine for distancing.

The week before things were closed down in mid-March, there were only maybe about ten people in my whole gym, so there wasn't a problem with distancing. When things open up again I expect something similar - not many people venturing out yet. The supermarket with its narrow aisles and unwiped fridge door handles is probably more risky than the gym will be

find;

FWIW; I think I got the year correct,

The CDC said 80,000 died during the 2017-18 winter flu season

That's why I always get the flu shot. I bet we see a higher update in flu shots this year and for a few more years. Typically flu shot reduces chances of hospitalization by about half and about half of adults get the shot. We should really get closer to 80-90% of the adult population getting flu shots.

This was a pretty bad flu season as well which is a large part of why adding COVID on top created so much havoc in our healthcare system. Reducing hospitalizations from the seasonal flu would provide us with more flexibility to deal with pandemics but conversely would put more of a strain on finances in HC system as hospitals plan on and rely on the income from treating flu patients.

By the way, 70k die per year from opioids overdoses. This is apropos of nothing, but I found it interesting as well.

Meanwhile, last week's downwardly-revised estimate that maybe only 60,000 Americans will die from COVID-19 this year will probably have to be "unrevised" as we are up to 44,000 and tacking on another 2,000 every day.

The previous estimate of 100,000 to 200,000 looks better. Lots of room in there for variation.

Unless everyone wears masks while working out I have to imagine the gym is 100x worse than a supermarket, especially with people huffing and puffing.

Wow! February 6 was the date I got sick and for a while now I have thought it was COVID 19:

" The Medical Examiner-Coroner performed autopsies on two individuals who died at home on February 6, 2020 and February 17, 2020. Samples from the two individuals were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Today, the Medical Examiner-Coroner received confirmation from the CDC that tissue samples from both cases are positive for SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Additionally, the Medical Examiner-Coroner has also confirmed that an individual who died in the county on March 6 died of COVID-19."
