I would love for policing to be improved. Unfortunately, nobody in their right mind wants to be a police officer in an environment where you are being videotaped and antagonized with selectively exited video tapes posted online. The anti-cop sentiment, often seen here, absolutely sucks.

My cops would be more "hey, Johnny, you'd better hurry up to school so you're not late" and less Dirty Harry. Blacks getting tossed in jail is the precise thing I'd be trying to avoid.

When I lived in Spain, it was with an exchange student host family.

The old man father related that he saw the leftists in the Spanish civil war kill his father outside their home. He was 16. Of course, he ended up having a career with Franco's military. He mostly mumbled and was hard to understand.

But the mother was very nice, an excellent cook, and explained things to me.

One story she related, lamented about, was in the good old days of Franco, there were cops simply walking around on every block, minding who was coming and going. They said things were much better then. No graffiti, homeless, pick-pockets, or open drug use.

I thought it sounded like big brother.

It IS an interesting question about how best to organize society so that it operates best. I think that's what much of OT is about. We collectively do a pretty shetty job of having that discussion.
