Government workers are fiscally irresponsible, and nobody cares because it is on the taxpayer's dime.

That's a mighty broad brush you're using. It'll probably take a week to get all the paint off of me.

Why wasn't somebody monitoring his overtime and doing something about this? This is bad on him and his boss and whoever is auditing payroll.

I agree with this. Inexcusable. If I accidentally put 15 minutes more overtime than I should on my time card, by the next day my supervisor is telling me to correct it. Of course, if I forget to mention the overtime, he reminds me to add it.

Glad you identified something in this thread is a broad brush. Almost every post is and often comes with a level of disdain or hatred for a broad group. For you sir, I edited my post to add the word "many."

Thanks. I think "some" is a more accurate word choice, but "many" is better than "all".

I am in total agreement with just payouts for police misconduct cases. I also think municipalities should occasionally let juries decide the amount of damages like in this case.

If a jury gives a lopsided damages award then after the city pays off the judgment they should hold a press conference and explain where the money came from and explain what social programs will be short on funding as a result (it is not allowed to discuss this during a trial).

I think in the long run this would make future settlements and jury verdicts more reasonable. Naturally, there would be firm legal challenges with regard to municipalities ever connecting the dots like this.

Wrong thread. This belongs in the Today in Criminals Thread. Your link lacks the actual story. The actual story is below if you care to know what happened.

"At least 75 local law enforcement officers are being placed on leave in Pittsburgh after firing their weapons in an hours long standoff with a man who shot at sheriff's deputies when they went to serve an eviction notice....a department spokesperson confirmed, and the leave is standard protocol for the department."

Would you feel more sympathetic if he were car jacking, shop lifting or vandalizing as opposed to providing medical assistance that led to the confrontation? Assume a different race and assume this was in the pursuit of stopping a crime and you may find more sympathy and rationalization.
Finally getting around to this: I would not show more sympathy toward such a criminal, no.

OK, then we are aligned. Seems like we agree that, even if one feels as if the cops are not behaving correctly, one should always still obey police instructions in a a highly tense situations.

I do believe everyone is in charge of watching out for themselves so I could care less if someone doesn't wear a mask.

"Masks have minimal effect at preventing COVID-19."

How well do face masks protect against COVID-19? - Mayo Clinic

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/coronavirus-mask/art-20485449

*Why do people that don't want to wear masks have to have the pristine narrative that the mask offers "minimal" protection? What is wrong with the fact that a mask can be helpful but I don't want to wear one?
It reminds me of the scenario that every person wrongfully killed by the police is always an altar boy. What is wrong with letting the truth out that the person had a criminal past …..but that it is irrelevant to the fact he was wrongfully killed and his heirs are entitled to be paid on a wrongful death claim.

My grandfather was OPD. I have a lot of respect for policemen. With that said, it is not debatable that there are some real bad cops.

L.A. is investigating 50-year-old police gangs, finally | Reuters

https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/la-is-investigating-50-year-old-police-gangs-finally-2022-03-30/

"In Los Angeles, there is no doubt.

Officials have known that violent, racist gangs operate within the ranks of the nation's largest local police force, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, for more than 30 years, according to news reports, federal court decisions, independent investigations and governmental analyses dating back to 1990. The deputy gangs create a shadow system of supervision, in conflict with the actual chain of command, and have an us-against-them culture that leads to racial profiling, frequent and excessive use of force, and sometimes deaths.

At least 18 of these secretive groups have been identified over the years, with macabre names like the Banditos, Jump Out Boys, Executioners and Grim Reapers, according to a 2021 report from the Loyola Law School Center for Juvenile Law and Policy.

Historically, the gangs have formed at mostly white police stations in poor, majority-Black and Latino immigrant communities so-called "ghetto stations," according to a 1992 study commissioned by the County Board of Supervisors. By contrast, majority-white, higher-income areas like Malibu "have never known deputy gangs or cliques," the Loyola Center reported."

Unfortunately, even though making folks in the criminal justice system appear as terrible racists is en vogue at the moment, there is and should be consequences of doing such. These dishonest portrayals further divide us, as demonstrated by the hatred in GFR's posts.

NEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Netflix was ordered by a federal judge to face a defamation lawsuit by best-selling author and former Manhattan prosecutor Linda Fairstein over her portrayal in a 2019 crime drama about the Central Park Five case.

U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel on Tuesday said Fairstein plausibly alleged that Netflix, director Ava DuVernay and writer-producer Attica Locke acted with actual malice as to five scenes in "When They See Us."

The series dramatized the story of five Black and Hispanic teenagers who spent five to 13 years in prison after being wrongfully convicted in the April 1989 rape of a white jogger in Central Park. Another man confessed in 2002.

Castel in a 67-page decision found evidence that in depicting Fairstein as a villain emblematic of broader problems in criminal justice, the defendants "reverse-engineered plot points to attribute actions, responsibilities and viewpoints to Fairstein that were not hers and are unsupported in defendants' substantial body of research materials."

The Manhattan judge said jurors should decide whether there was "clear and convincing evidence that defendants were recklessly indifferent to the truth."

Fairstein, 76, had been running the sex crimes unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's office when the 28-year-old jogger, later identified as Trisha Meili, was attacked.

The five alleged defamatory scenes include suggestions that Fairstein withheld evidence, coerced confessions and ordered a mass police roundup of young Black men in Harlem.

Backlash from the series caused Fairstein to lose her publisher, resign under pressure from several boards and be attached on social media including under the hashtag #CancelLindaFairstein.

The defendants said Fairstein offered no evidence that their portrayal of her "reflected the essence of truth" and was protected by the First Amendment.

They also said that the lawsuit threatened filmmakers' ability to dramatize controversial, real-life events when told from "different and often marginalized perspectives."

One more time for the slow ones on the back policing in America's inception was the slave patrols. Therefore to some they feel that the police are not designed to be helpful to them(apparently some don't comprehend this why because they are NOT part of that group) the police perpetuate racist social constructs. Why is the math not adding up? Ohh because too many are racist to the core thus they are blind on purpose, why be concerned with something that doesn't affect negatively you in any way.

This here is shows what is wrong with policing in America they called at 4pm got the house at 10-11pm then accused the child of sending pornographic material.

And a woman office at that and these were white people smh makes me think those officers are pedos themselves.

This is the point i keep reiterating about OPD and Oakland's crime issues. Change of chief won't matter change of DA won't matter and change of mayor won't matter either

Not thrilled with the police response here. Also very alarmed by you taking this incident, injecting your racism into it, and accusing the officers of being pedophiles because they are white. Further alarmed by you taking this incident and somehow concluding that it directly relates to Oakland's crime issues such that their city government can't stop their crime issues. Please try to run from whoever is indoctrinating you to hate white people and immigrants.

I read that the officers were trying to get folks to leave the stadium to avoid fights etc after the game. The officers asked the band director many times to stop conducting the band to play, and the band director told them many times to f off and he wasn't stopping until they were done. This wasn't an unreasonable ask and folks need to respect police officers. Apparently it escalated to this where the cop felt the best way to control the situation was to tase the unruly band director. This is unfortunate but not as bad as the cop haters make it out to be. The attorney representing the director said that there were enough officers there to subdue him less aggressively. The altercation happened 18 minutes after the game had ended and the stadium lights had been turned off.
