Your last point is certainly true, but so far the piece of evidence they've chosen to publicly share to 'prove' tunnels under hospitals is disproven. So the benefit of the doubt associated with the claim that tunnels are under hospitals is not appropriate.

Regardless, I fully reject the premise that the evidence of a Hamas tunnel under a hospital is then grounds to bomb that hospital. Gas the tunnel, flood the tunnel, send dogs into the tunnel, send in special forces. Israel bombing hospitals is part of their Dahiya Doctrine - outlined by former IDF Chief of General Staff Gadi Eizenkot.

The Dahiya Doctrine calls for: "the destruction of the civilian infrastructure of regimes deemed to be hostile as a measure calculated to deny combatants the use of that infrastructure and endorses the employment of disproportionate force to secure that end.

The doctrine is named after the Dahieh neighborhood of Beirut, where Hezbollah was headquartered during the 2006 Lebanon War, which were heavily damaged by the IDF.


The UN issued the Goldstone Report following the 2008-2009 Gaza War, finding that the strategy "was designed to punish, humiliate and terrorize a civilian population".

In a region with growing asymmetric resistance capabilities to Israel's military dominance, destroying civilian infrastructure has not yet proven to be effective to deter or diminish the military strength of Israel's opponents. At a time of increased political pressure, destroying civilian infrastructure has not endeared Israel diplomatically to their neighbors, and is producing negative global and American diplomatic pressure on Israel, potentially limiting the American appetite for escalation, and isolating Israel internationally moreso than ever before.

Having said all that, the death of any Palestinian (or Israeli) civilian is a tragedy. But this is a war. A war started by Hamas where Hamas has said it will not stop waging war - ever. Israel is allowed to defend itself in a war and has gone well beyond the international standards for minimizing civilians deaths in warfare. Far more than the US and other western countries did in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the fight against Al Queda/Isis.

So when people point to the Israel efforts to minimize deaths - which far exceed any other warring nation's - it is not a dismissal of the deaths themselves. It is to point out they were unavoidable given Israel's unequivocal right to defend itself from Hamas. That is the sad reality.

I am sorry, but the statements by MartyrMade (maybe not an unbiased source with that name??) is just emotional stupidity or a flat out lie (MM, not you). Israel calls civilians and drops leaflets warning civilians of pending attacks and advising them to leave the region. If MM was correct they'd abandon those efforts, as they obviously are immensely helpful to Hamas.

The NYT, WaPo are definitely pro-Israel, yes. Amnesty is more neutral. I doubt they have they claimed that Al Shifa hospital is being used as a Hamas military base.

Past tense. Used. To reach the common sense understanding that if Hamas used the hospital for war purposes in the past they are virtually certain to be doing it now. 2014 Amnesty International report on Hamas torture and murder of PA and civilians accused of helping Israel:

"As well as carrying out unlawful killings, others abducted by Hamas were subjected to torture, including severe beatings with truncheons, gun butts, hoses and wire or held in stress positions. Some were interrogated and tortured or otherwise ill-treated in a disused outpatient's clinic within the grounds of Gaza City's main al-Shifa hospital. At least three people arrested during the conflict accused of "collaboration" died in custody."

Palestinians living in Gaza and the West Bank are issued Israeli ID numbers. The 10,000+ victims that have been named by the Palestinians have been identified with their ID numbers.

As well we also have a fairly good idea about the volume of ammunition unleashed upon the population, and the number of buildings destroyed via satellite imagery and other means, this provides you with a ballpark estimate compatible with the above figure. When you drop tens of thousands of bombs on densely populated neighborhoods, you are certainly going to get a death toll in the thousands.
