I don't want to make it seem like I disagree with you or am quibbling. Everything you said is technically correct. But context matters and I think there is some context here that would be helpful.

Teen Vogue has been a business failure. It went out of print publication in 2017 and they've been trying to give it a go as an online property. They reportedly generate less than $10M per year in revenue, so I doubt they have much full-time staff.

With that context, I wouldn't assume that this was a mistake by Conde Nast. It's a small, failing business that Conde Nast is trying to turnaround. They may have reasonably believed that they needed someone different from the existing staff because what they were doing wasn't working. They've been trying to make it less fashion oriented and more political and edgy. For all we know they hired that reporter so that they could have this whole dustup to generate some buzz. They have probably received more brand awareness from this "mistake" than they've had organically since the brand was founded in 2003.

Thanks for posting - pretty balanced takes overall. Nice to see typical historical political criticism which was more or less impossible for the past 4 years. Whether Biden succeeds or not in advancing his policy priorities, I'm at least confident that he will be on the fairway and aiming for the green. The last guy almost never kept his ball on the golf course and rarely even seemed to know what the game was.

Just a reminder that Biden's child tax credit payments are kicking in now. This is expected to make a significant difference in child poverty and is likened to social security for children. I'm not sure whether it will really have that sort of impact but if so I hope it continues, albeit with a lower cutoff. The way it's set up now, families making over $400k still get some payments which to me seems ridiculous.

I would like to see the phaseout reduced so that it's only addressing poverty and not something that permits people to game the system. For example, paying up to $9k per year for a family of 5 making ~3x the average family income in a state is excessive and can be better spent elsewhere. It feels like a redistribution from childless people to families.

Why would you use CPI instead of PCE, which I believe you've argued is a better measure? PCE is 6.6%, still high but significantly lower than CPI.

I don't think anyone expects fuel costs to stay this high indefinitely so I would suspect that we'll see $3 nationally by the end of the year.

Of course, it's anybody's guess as to how much the current China lockdowns will contribute to supply side inflation.

According to RedFin, rents in the US jumped 14% in December 2021 to $1,877a month, the largest rise in more than two years. Austin, Texas had a 40% increase. NYC had a 35% increase. Several metro areas in Florida exceeded 30% rent increases.

I would suggest that these rent increases have dwarfed any wage gains.
