From Mark Halperin's reporting, it was Nancy Pelosi who led the effort to force Biden's hand but he didn't follow up to say exactly how she did it.
Halperin's reporting corroborates my sources, which are largely fictional. Pelosi got together with Obama, Clinton, Schumer and Jeffries. They all agreed that Biden needed to end his run, no question.
When Obama and Clinton got cold feet about telling Biden, Pelosi said she would do the talking, that sometimes tough conversations need to happen, for the good of the country. She told them that, the next time something like this comes around, they might be more courageous if they concentrated more on how much good they were doing, rather than how difficult it was to have the conversation, that many people have died for their country and all they need to do was have a conversation.
So she took some of them and they went to Rehoboth Beach...
She started out by being very complimentary and then finally asking him to do the right thing.
He said no, he had made up his mind.
So she said that she had "asked" him out of deference, but that was just polite talk, she was actually telling him that he needed to give up his campaign, as he had no chance to win and this is about the country, not his feelings. She plumped a stack of papers on his desk, the polling and all that. "You've seen all of this. You know. Mr. President, I'm sorry, but it's over. It's over."
He still said no and was becoming agitated. Said if he wanted, he could have the Secret service remove her.
She said no, he wasn't going to do that and finally said that he could either do this the easy way or the hard way and told him what would happen each and every day over the next 10 days as the pressure ratcheted up... and it wasn't pretty. Then they left and she said that he had 24 hours to get used to the idea, but this is the way it's going to be. Period. Sorry it has to come down like this, but it's over.
Now
that's a leader. Balls of steel... and with a nice hairdo, to boot!
