I am so happy to hear that I'm still young. As are my senior citizen parents who used to be republican when the Republican Party was the smart party.

Trump is so awful.
But what's worse is the GOP leadership who has led all their lemmings to eat his farts.

tRump has already declared that the stock market will crash if he is impeached. That has now morphed into:

Trump Warns of Epic Stock Market Crash If He's Not Re-Elected

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-15/trump-warns-of-epic-stock-market-crash-if-he-s-not-re-elected

Sometimes a citizen has to take a hit for the greater good. I will gladly jump on that grenade. DUMP tRUMP IN 2020!

Fact-Checking Trump's Campaign Kickoff Rally: Russia, the Wall and Tax Cuts

If a key to defeating tRump in 2020 is to coax mom and pop in the flyovers off the fence into Uncle Joe's camp, might it not be a good idea to defer discussion of the Reparations issue until AFTER the Dems have secured the White House?
If dumping tRump is like a Chess game, the Reparations discussion seems like a "you just lost your Queen" move to me.

I don't understand why it appears Dems are hoping to run the same 2016 experiment over again in 2020 with Biden (a life-long centrist member of the political establishment).

Centrists had purpose in a bygone era (for better or for worse). Nobody wants a centrist who will concede on key issues to the opposing party anymore.

It's not clear to me that Biden is what Democrats "want." He tops the polls individually, but he's also not close to 50%, which means that currently more people have someone else as their favorite.

And even if you want to cite polls as evidence that Democrats are ga-ga over Biden, the polls also show him beating Trump handily, both nationally and in the swing states. So it's hard to argue both that he'll win the nomination and lose the general.

Because the two parties don't understand that the last election was largely about the status quo (the two parties) being rejected. Over 60% still believes the country is headed in the wrong direction. Backwards is not the right direction.

I have no idea who will win the 2020 general. But I certainly don't think replicating 2016 is their best strategy to beat Trump. Polls showed Shilary would win handily too. Biden leads all other Dem candidates.
Anarchistbear

The polls are always a 2 man race. Last time third parties went from 1-4%. Biden vs Trump will mean another bump- - a larger one. I suspect Justice Democrat's or Greens run someone better than Dr Stein

...then I think you are going to appreciate this comment in the Daily Mail to a story about tRump's Kick Off 2020 Campaign rally in Florida:

"It's a Klan rally wrapped in a Monster truck show wrapped in a WWE match stuffed into a GED class." Crispy13

So do polls matter or not? Can't be both.

Polls matter and can be wrong, like many things in life. But that's not really the point. The point is Biden leads. That means that, right now, he is the leading candidate. And that, I'd argue, is not great for Dems.

Perhaps. Biden isn't my favorite either, but given that he is polling well I have to consider that I'm wrong and maybe he actually does connect with the broader electorate.

Right now I'd bet the field over him though.

I think it's like Hillary in 2008 or Jeb Bush in 2016. He is a front runner based on recognition and because nobody else has caught fire but someone likely will. Biden's biggest opponent is Biden.

Joe Biden Refuses To Apologize For Comments On Segregationists

https://www.google.com/amp/s/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5d0adccfe4b09f5a54b5e266/amp

I am very disappointed that the sacred votes of mom and pop in the key Electoral College flyover states have forced us into the arms of a mediocre candidate like Uncle Joe, but that being the case, I'm glad Joe has gotten tRumpian with regard to refusing to apologize. Once you start apologizing to the Progressives, they will be nipping at your heels until they run you out of town. Look what happen to Al Franken when he went full meow meow. We got deprived of one of our most capable and intelligent senators.

Agreed. Bowing to an irrational mob has far reaching consequences.

But live by the sword, die by the sword. A key failure in my view of rational liberals has been their impotence in calling out and criticizing the identitarian, reactionary regressives (do not conflate rational liberals with the "centrist" liberals who shill for the establishment Democrats). Not only not criticizing these regressives to the margins of the Left where they belong, many of them have joined in solidarity with this identitarian faction, emboldening them to the point where its influence and ideology reside now, which is mainstream culturally and politically.

As Alan Dershowitz said recently, "I am a liberal. But my enemy is on the Left."

But Trump narrowly holds onto Arizona, Florida, North Carolina and Wisconsin which Democrats are gunning for and keeps the White House.
Jim Messina, President Obama's 2012 campaign manager, predicted the race will come down to two or three states:

"We could be sitting on Election Day not knowing who will win." Axios

I saw his comments on this. He didn't "predict" that it would happen. He said it was plausible.

2016 election
Didn't vote- 48%
Trump- 26%
Clinton 26%

Trump's popularity is the same as it was four years ago. Rather than expand his base he has marginally shrunk it.

It's the Democrats to lose just like in 2016.

Elections are about the future.

When the Progressive candidate doesn't get the nomination, his or her supporters won't vote.

Why should they? Voting is an affirmation not a calculation over which of two pimps is less disgusting.

He'd have a better shot at winning the general election is what I mean. Along with Warren, though I think Warren will come off as smug and elitist to centrists living in middle america more so than Bernie.
