To steal from a writer for the Economist, "Republicans put politics before economics".

Not a peep about deficits and debt 2000-2008, even when Bush signed an unpaid for medicare prescription bill. 2009 and Republicans are like 'but but but fiscal responsibility people!" lmao.

The Dems answer is to spend and hey we'll just tax our way to tranquility.

Both of these ideologies are unpalatable, IMO.

But whose gonna be the party/president to END the party of an inflated and over-leveraged economy, and ballooning deficits? These politicians primary goal (congress) is to keep their seats. Hard to do by telling your constituents you're going to take more and give less. One of the problems with insurmountable deficits and debt is the economy becomes dependent on the stimulus with no pathway to settling the balance sheet.

But the claim is based on the assumption that Dems maintain this position throughout the general up through election day, since it obviously will be a contentious topic at the forefront of debates, media etc.
Well, that's a little more nuanced. I can see an argument for that.

I'm not totally sure, though. Immigration tends to ebb and flow as a major election issue, so if it was a big one in the last Presidential year, chances are it won't be in the next one. There is a lot of time for something else to supplant this.

You don't think Trump and Republicans will hammer this issue home in light of their stance at the debate? The Dem winner will have to address it well enough.

I'm saying there's more than a year to go and plenty of time for something else to take people's attention away from it. So it might not wind up being as important as many of these pundits think.

agree with you. The current annual deficits are completely unacceptable, and neither party seems to care.
But the GOP shoulders more blame.

You're completely delusional if you truly believe that. Both parties deserve the blame. The Socialists (formerly called Democrats) refuse to cut any programs except defense, and the GOP refuses to cut defense. Neither party has the courage to eliminate the many tax loopholes that exist for businesses or the super wealthy. The Socialists only solution to the deficits is to raise taxes.

You obviously have no clue what socialist or socialism mean. You get your man panties in a twist when Trump and his boot kickers are equated with Fascists, but have no problem at all throwing around big words you think you know.

Wow - you really are triggered by anyone that challenges your unfounded, knee-jerk, Reich Wing playbook statements.

I'd suggest you to do some research, but you'd probably just read Breitbart and Daily Stormer and watch Tucker and Hannity and call it a done deal.

Article about Berkeley school busing during the time Kamala Harris would have experienced it:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/30/us/politics/kamala-harris-berkeley-busing.html

Quote:

Carole Porter, 55, who now works in information technology, lived around the corner from Ms. Harris. The two girls took the bus up the hill from the middle-class Berkeley flats where they lived to Thousand Oaks, a school in the white, more affluent Berkeley hills. Ms. Porter recalled that the ride took about 40 minutes.

Ms. Harris attended a Montessori school for kindergarten and joined Ms. Porter at Thousand Oaks in first grade. During the debate, she described herself as "part of the second class to integrate her public schools," and her classmates were the second group of kindergartners to be bused to schools outside their neighborhoods. A campaign spokeswoman confirmed that Ms. Harris joined the class in 1970, her first grade year, which was the third year of integration. The school had been 2.5 percent black in 1963. In 1969, it was 40.2 percent black as a result of integration.

Ms. Porter, who has donated to Ms. Harris's campaign, remembered her former classmate as a responsible student who was being raised by a single mother.
Doesn't really seem like she was fibbing.

Harris lived in 'the flats'. Two PHD parents that were Professors at Cal and Stanford. I know Berkeley very, very well. What street did Kammala live on? Forty minutes up the hill to Colusa and Solano? Did she live in Albany? Sorry, she is fibbing.

My wife taught for twenty five years in the RUSD. Because there was no buy in in busing in 1974 from El Cerrito parents. In fact, they damn near rioted. New teachers, those with 3 years or less, who taught in EC or Richmond Annex schools were moved to schools deep in the Ghetto The idea being that if you couldn integrae by busing. Almost all of those young teachers left the profession after one year.

Having taught in SFUSD for two years I know the deal. People leave for all sorts of reasons...just like any profession. Having drawn a teacher's salary I can tell you how to fix retention rates - PAY TEACHERS MORE, SMALLER CLASS SIZES, PONY UP FOR SUPPLIES. And no, I don't mean 25 year lifers at their max...I mean the starting salary which is just crappy...$38k, and that's the current.

I have a good friend from Cal who was bussed from EC to Richmond, just as you mentioned. He graduated Cal with honors, went to Furd for law and is a partner in a tech firm in Sili Valley. He turned out fine, he has no regrets. He went to Kennedy HS. Yes, he's a traditional liberal and his parents were more than fine with bussing. In this case, I'll take the student's personal experience over a teacher side explanation about lack of retention. YMMV.

Ah yes, illegal immigrants are such a valuable voting bloc.

Is it not possible they and/or Democratic voters might actually believe in some of this stuff on principle?
It's not the illegals that provide a significant voting block for Dems, it's the moronic liberals who are committed to this incoherent pathology.

So in other words, they are trying to represent their constituency. Horrible!
You first insinuate they might actually believe it.

It's pointed out that's not likely, given how stupid it is.

You then defend the Dems possible pandering on the basis of them simply representing their constituency.

So what politicians support is irrelevant so long as some subset of their "constituency" supports it? Fascinating

You'll apologize for the Left any time for any reason won't you?

You call it stupid. I don't think it is. I guess this means I have a mental illness.

Also, I did not call it "pandering," that's your word. It's very possible (even likely) that liberal voters who believe in something might elect people who also believe in that thing.

I absolutely agree with your first paragraph..As for the second, You are wrong. I know a whole lot of Cal alums who chose to move from EC to Walnut Creek and other burbs out this way so busing wouldn't be an issue in their kids' lives. Oh BTW, more than a few of them would count themselves as liberals.

Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) told reporters Friday that he wants the bill to send a loud message to America.

"We need to continue to send a very, very loud message that we are going to embrace and uplift and support all American immigrant neighbors," he said, adding that the bill would "allow Dreamers and other immigrants to appear on the ballot in order to run and serve on California Democratic Party Central Committees and as State Delegates to the Party."

This is a great explainer on what it means to decriminalize illegal border crossings. It is far from an open border policy. We currently use civil courts and criminal courts to process illegal border crossing. The criminal part is what Trump is using to justify his program of taking children away from their parents. The reality is, most of the illegal immigration situation, including deportations, is already handled by the civil courts. This just takes the criminal (and punitive) part out of the equation and lets deportation and border management go forward in a humane manner.

I've talked about my views on immigration on this site and how it is to the right of pretty much the entire Democratic Party (ending asylum, etc.). I am in favor of decriminalizing border crossings and returning to humane treatment of illegal crossings. I want strong borders. I have nothing in common with people who support our current policy.
