If it's true that Trump wanted to keep a potential vaccine exclusive to the US, which I have no reason to disbelieve and is entirely consistent with everything Trump has done and said in his life, is pathetic. I'm all for incentivizing private industry to develop vaccines and cures, but something like this is so important and widespread that it needs to be made available to the world. Anything less than that is a massive failure and inhumane.

Is there anyone who would defend this behavior?
Not only inhumane, but completely stupid on a practical level. You want this disease to be eradicated in as many places as possible, lest it come back here.
A fundamental with Trump's textbook case of Dunning Kruger is that he turns what he thinks is a zero sum game into a no win situation.

We need to eradicate this disease like smallpox and sycasey is right that the best thing for Americans is to have the vaccine everywhere in the world ASAP and for a price that the world can afford.

As we've seen in the last 3 years, when Trump tries to hurt people outside the US it tends to blow up in his face and make things worse for Americans.

Heard from a friend caught up in the O'Hare mess that passengers were essentially corralled. Your choice was the line/mass or the overflowing restroom. Not much or any option to wander off.

from another WP account "Landing at Dulles Airport, I encountered a case study in how to spread a pandemic"..

j> When I inched closer to the front, I could see that a scant six immigration desks were in service. Two additional desks to the left had less traffic. These are ordinarily for people in wheelchairs; now, the wheelchairs were mixed in with the rest. When I asked a security guard about the other lines, he told me they were for people with a confirmed corona diagnosis. There was no separation for this group no plastic sheets, not even a bit of distance. When your line snaked to the left, you were inches away from the infected.

> Some of the agents were asking people to use the fingerprint screen all fingers, then the thumbs. Mine didn't, but I watched the adjoining one and was astounded to see that the screen was not wiped, sprayed or in any way sanitized between individuals, or indeed at all during the hour I had it in my line of sight.

> That was it. No instruction to maintain a two-week self-quarantine. No phone number to call if I felt symptoms standard in Europe for several weeks. After being immersed in our three-hour virus incubator, we were unleashed on the American public, free to mingle. This had to be going on all day and further into the night, as flights kept landing and the immigration hall kept filling with new passengers.

52 years ago this month, Lyndon Johnson said these words to a national TV audience:

"... With America's sons in the fields far away, with America's future under challenge right here at home, with our hopes and the world's hopes for peace in the balance every day, I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office the presidency of this country," Johnson intoned, looking earnestly into the camera lens

Accordingly, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president."

How about if Stephen Miller cuts and pastes from this speech, plugs in the COVID 19 crisis and at the end tRump flicks it in like LBJ? Perfect out for a birdbrain 50 feet over his head that just sh@it the bed and wants to go home.

Under GOP trickle down and pseudo-patriotism and fake-greatness and greed is good, we have become the Raiders of nations. Not the raiders, the Raiders. Over-inflated self-worth based on past achievements with no true eye on our current status and with no desire to take actual measures to change and become great again, just keep saying the word great as if repetition makes it true.

Oh, and anyone who sees us for who we really are is not part of Raider Nation (MAGA cult).

Great initiative from Tulsi to address the short-term economic damage from covid19, which will hurt those at the bottom the hardest:

Quote:

Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) called for introducing a universal basic income (UBI) of $1,000 a month until coronavirus "no longer presents a public health emergency."

"Most Americans don't have that safety emergency bank account even for a short term, what to speak of if you're talking about weeks, or in this case people are looking at potentially months," Gabbard said in an interview on Hill.TV.

Her proposal, H.R. 897, would give a UBI of $1,000 per month to all adult Americans "until COVID-19 no longer presents a public health emergency."

While Tulsi Gabbard is indeed floating a $1k UBI proposal, let's be clear that she's hardly the only one and the idea is not "hers."

For example, here's one from a Republican (RINO these days?) Mitt Romney: https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/16/coronavirus-stimulus-romney-proposes-1000-for-every-american.html

Earlier this month, I believe Jason Furman, chair of the Council of Economic Advisors and former advisor to the 2008 Obama campaign had already proposed it.

It's an interesting idea, and I don't necessarily disagree with Gabbard (or Romney) for adding their names to proposals for it, but the idea is hardly a brilliant original stroke of genius "by" either one of them. Other politicians and economists of various political stripes have been bringing it up.

T sounding very different in this presser. Very subdued and less bluster. This isn't a stock market pump up chat. It's closer to the real conversation we need to have. Maybe some national confidence will build up over the days and weeks if he continues to come across as being straight up and not campaigning. But he's still talking so who knows how this one will end.

OneKeg - Tulsi has been working on this bill earlier last week, she was the first legislator to advocate for emergency UBI, among other measures including mortgage relief and moratorium on bank foreclosures. She's definitely been leading this UBI initiative in Congress. CNBC and other outlets have not covered this, or any other aspects of her recent positions.

I know she's not a popular figure among mainstream Democrats because she's been the target of a relenltess media campaign for her non-interventionist foreign policy stance, but you have to give her some credit here.

Among other policies she's advocated:

-M4A
-Ban electronic voting and return to paper ballots with complete traceability
-Repeal/non-extension of the Patriot Act (which incidentally was partially drawn up by Joe Biden)
-Ending regime change wars and occupations in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan etc
-Banning the use of torture
-Re-implementation of the Glass-Steagall Act and tighter regulation of Wall Street

https://www.tulsigabbard.org/

Tulsi has also called for stopping international flights and tighter border controls two weeks ago:

It's a little bit more than that.

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/1/16/18182114/tulsi-gabbard-2020-president-campaign-policies

Quote:

But in the following years, Gabbard staked out foreign policy positions that shocked her allies. She joined Republicans in demanding that President Obama use the term "radical Islam." She was the member of Congress most willing to advocate for Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad. She dubbed herself a "hawk" on terrorism. Reporters documented worrying ties to anti-LGBTQ groups including one run by her father and anti-Muslim Hindu nationalists.
Could the reporting on some of this stuff be driven by her non-interventionist stance? Maybe. But I think those things would be problems for most Democrats either way.

She should just switch parties. Trump has shown that actual policy positions don't really matter in the Republican party as long as you agree to hate the same people.
