"Filmmaker Ken Burns and historian Geoffrey Ward, who have collaborated since 1984 on documentaries that include "The Civil War" and "The Roosevelts," shared stories about leadership in crisis:

Burns: "This [pandemic] crisis is on the level of the Second World War, but particularly the Depression and the Civil War. As Lincoln predicted, the danger didn't come from without, but from within, and now that's literally medically, epidemiologically true, but also politically and socially true as well. So this is as great a crisis as we've had."
"We have the opportunity here to press a kind of reset button about our values."
Burns said that both Lincoln and FDR "made huge and glaring mistakes, but a sign of their leadership was their willingness to accept those mistakes, to acknowledge them publicly, to take the blame, to have the buck stop with them and to move on and try something else."

"The greatest measure of leadership is: Are you part of the solution or are you part of the problem?" Axios

Well, even the resident Trump sycophants know that won't happen in the next handful of months. For at least a while longer, the states are largely on their own.

Is Burns going to make a 15 part pandemic series with mournful Appalachian music and Garrison Keillor's doleful baritone letting us know this is worse than the Civil War.

No, Keillor was canceled. He'll use James Earl Jones.

Departments across The Times have been robustly covering the coronavirus pandemic for months. But Ms. Landon and her colleagues realized that "both among ourselves and perhaps in the general reading public, there's a little bit of a fatigue with the data."

"We knew we were approaching this milestone," she added. "We knew that there should be some way to try to reckon with that number."

Putting 100,000 dots or stick figures on a page "doesn't really tell you very much about who these people were, the lives that they lived, what it means for us as a country," Ms. Landon said. So, she came up with the idea of compiling obituaries and death notices of Covid-19 victims from newspapers large and small across the country, and culling vivid passages from them.

Alain Delaqurire, a researcher, combed through various sources online for obituaries and death notices with Covid-19 written as the cause of death. He compiled a list of nearly a thousand names from hundreds of newspapers. A team of editors from across the newsroom, in addition to three graduate student journalists, read them and gleaned phrases that depicted the uniqueness of each life lost:

"Alan Lund, 81, Washington, conductor with 'the most amazing ear' "

"Theresa Elloie, 63, New Orleans, renowned for her business making detailed pins and corsages "

"Florencio Almazo Morn, 65, New York City, one-man army "

"Coby Adolph, 44, Chicago, entrepreneur and adventurer "

Last winter, 80,000 Americans died from the flu, and the NYT barely noticed.

CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in U.S.

I guess that reporting that the death toll from flu viruses this year is 25%-35% above last year's doesn't make as dramatic a headline.

That wasn't this year. This year the estimates are 24-62k. I'm not sure how relevant it is to refer to the flu - we do have a flu vaccine that people can take which helps reduce mortality annually, so it's not like we ignore the seasonal flu either.

We have good flu years and bad flu years. That is neither here nor there when discussing a novel virus like COVID.

Why the misinformation?

Look at what you posted 2 months ago about COVID and please let us know why you are singing a completely different tune now.
How dare you question the "statnews."

1- This is a scientific publication from the Boston Globe geared towards the medical and scientific community
https://www.statnews.com/about/

2- The number they are reporting is the offcial number from the CDC, it is the same figure that has been relayed by other media sources, including the NYT and CNN, sources that you trust more or less blindly, and of course the 80,000 figure was originally published by the CDC, which I would guess you also trust as a source.

This is why the issue of wearing a mask is crazy. It has nothing to do with liberal or conservative, some people wear a mask every day because their lives depend on it. When you are severely immunocompromised due to a stem cell transplant, currently receiving chemotherapy, have had cancer, sickle cell anemia, MGUS, or any of a host of other issues wearing a mask is something you have to do. To have someone shout at you that you're a "liberal *****" or unpatriotic is disheartening at a time in your life when you just don't need that kind of ****, so be mindful of how you approach people and what you say without knowing their stories.

When wearing a mask for protection (and mostly for the protection of OTHERS) is portrayed as a political statement or an affront to presidential/national loyalty, you know we as a country are deep deep deep into the F@CKED UP.

True. Eventually the narcissists, sociopaths, control freaks and weirdos make it to the top of any form of political organization through sheer desire and perseverance, cheered on by their less successful fellow travelers and fearful little bootlickers. Just look at this board. But at least we get periodic cycles of death and rebirth, and death is imminent for the remaining empires - U.S. and China. I'm looking forward to the secession movements.

If somebody sees fit to not wear a mask at home, or outside while a reasonable distance from others, hey no problem. (Duh.) If somebody wants to argue about the value of wearing masks, hey, no problem there either, of course.

However, if someone doesn't want to wear a mask when shopping at my local Safeway, hey, too freaking bad: It's a public health issue. (I will make an exception maybe in certain areas of the country such as Montana where there is basically no coronavirus... yet.)

It's an act of patriotism to sacrifice some freedoms for the sake of others when you're in the middle of a public health crisis. People who aren't wearing masks where it is recommended to wear them are not looking out for their fellow Americans.

By the way, I support that guy's right to call her a liberal *****, just like I support your right to call anyone a conservative *******, or a Trumptard (personally, I like Trumpkin better lol) or whatever other juvenile taunts your particular brand of simpletons enjoy. My advice to her - toughen up, buttercup. Sometimes you run into *******s. Either engage them or ignore them, but don't whine about them.

If somebody sees fit to not wear a mask at home, or outside while a reasonable distance from others, hey no problem. (Duh.) If somebody wants to argue about the value of wearing masks, hey, no problem there, either, of course.

However, if someone doesn't want to wear a mask when shopping at my local Safeway, hey, too freaking bad: It's a public health issue. (I will make an exception maybe in certain areas of the country such as Montana where there is basically no coronavirus... yet.)

It's an act of patriotism to sacrifice some freedoms for the sake of others, when you're in the middle of a public health crisis. People who aren't wearing masks where it is recommended to wear them are not looking out for their fellow Americans.

Tired of these idiots who politicize wearing a mask.

It is not a freedom issue when you walk into a private establishment or private residence. You are not infringing on my rights when you insist I do not walk into your house naked or insist that I refrain from taking a dump in your living room. Just like a person can choose not to shop at Costco, Costco can choose not to let people in.

And it is not some sign of bravery that one chooses not to use something that is intended to protect others. If you want to not wear seat belt, that's fine. If you want to smoke in a gas station, that is not fine because that is jeopardizing my life.

I would tell these boneheads to wear a ****ing mask and actually read the Bill of Rights. We never adopted an amendment that reads, I can do whatever I want and screw the rest of you. That fortunately never became part of our Constitution.

Is anyone signing up to receive the COVID vaccine Israel is set to deliver soon?

No fan of ANTIFA or any other anarchists. They destroyed my city a few times during Occupy Oakland. When they mixed it up with the tRumpists (supplemented by the Proud Boys and other Alt Right groups) in front of Berkeley City Hall a couple of years back, the perfect outcome for me would have been if they had slaughtered each other to the last man.

It speaks volumes that tRump and his supporters can't visualize people who oppose him as anything other than the Radical Left.
The irony is that no one hates tRump more vociferously than Republicans that didn't give tRump their ball sacks (like The Lincoln Project).
