Been listening to a broadcast of an economist talking about production slow downs in China, how they impact ports like Long Beach and stores across America - leading to layoffs. If this continues and gets worse (which medical professions say is likely) then coronavirus could cause the economy to slow - meaning Trouble for Trump's #1 path to re-election: strong economy. I happened to be in the car and listened to about 5-10 min of the press conference. At this point I feel comfortable saying that the only reason our federal government holds press conferences is to announce their fealty to Trump and stroke his fragile ego. Very little of the discussion was for the benefit of the American people because they spent so much time praising Trump for his response to the crisis.

I give him credit for limiting travel early, which I think has bought us some time to cultivate a strategy to respond to the likely outbreak nationwide, but his over the top statements about how he's single handedly beaten back covid19 is dangerous and a wholly inappropriate response to a potential health crisis. It's the equivalent of holding a press conference to celebrate a victory during the first quarter of a game. As is his misleading promises of a "rapid" development of a vaccine that no one is projecting will be developed in time to prevent the outbreak (best estimate for development is 12-18 months).

The fact that Trump is more concerned about the impact on the stock market than public health has me very concerned that he is sugarcoating the risks of the spread of the virus and that he will cause the CDC to provide false information the way China reportedly has and the way he did with the hurricane in Alabama, among other things.

It just dawned on me that Trump must have assigned Pence to the Coronavirus for two reasons:
1) If we, the world defeat it, he can give Pence a political torch, which he will then claim as his own brilliance.
2) If it becomes an out of control pandemic, he can blame Pence and fire him.

He elevates it to the highest level so he can take the credit, but doesn't tuck it directly under his arm so he doesn't have to take the blame. Heads I win, tails you lose. Brilliant!

The market is down 8% in just the few days since he sent that tweet. If Obama or Pelosi had said something this monumentally stupid and dangerous, some deep state stooge in Barr's DOJ would be working on indictments right now. But because it's Trump, they are all probably figuring out how to declare an 8% drop (with more to come?) evidence that the market looked good a few days ago.

I hope the adults in the room are able to prevent Pence, Trump and Azar from politicizing our response to COVid19 and that we act in the best interests of the hundreds of millions of americans, rather than the audience of one unprincipled, amoral, narcissistic dementia-addled dotard.

I'm no longer working on a trading desk, but as a knee jerk reaction to a family member yesterday I said that this market could easily drop 30%, and then only fall back to the point (roughly) that we thought it was due for a correction.

Trump's market is heavily spurred on by $1T budget deficits and low interest rates, and corporate tax cut!

I'd have to go back to the charts to have an idea more clear than that, but in general, I don't see this ending until the coronavirus ends, and that appears to be NOWHERE NEAR to the horizon! Prepare for more pullback!
